Why is it essential to protect your eyes from blue light?

Pourquoi est-il primordial de protéger vos yeux de la lumière bleue ?

Blue light is omnipresent in our daily lives. According to one study, we spend an average of more than 6 consecutive hours in front of screens (televisions, computers, smartphones, tablets), which is HUGE! Especially when we know the damage blue light can have on our eyes. But before talking about the damage, let's first try to define what blue light is.

What is blue light?

Blue light is the light wave located between 380 and 500 nanometers. It is broken down into different shades of blue ranging from turquoise to violet. This light source is emitted by the sun and by all the screens we use daily. The shade that reaches the retina is called blue-violet light, and it is this one that is likely to have an impact on your visual comfort, as it is close to ultraviolet radiation, which is known to be dangerous for our eyes... Screens, in particular, emit peaks of blue-violet light called High-Energy Visible light.

Thus, prolonged exposure to blue light radiation can cause photochemical lesions of the retina and lens. This means that without protection with anti-blue light glasses, the damage could be terrible.

The damages of blue light

Short-term

  • Stinging,
  • Glare,
  • Blurred vision,
  • Accommodation difficulties,
  • Dry eyes
  • Eye strain.

Medium-term

  • Migraines,
  • Headaches,
  • Mood, attention, and sleep disorders.

Long-term

  • Age-related macular degeneration (AMD), aggravation of this disease if you already suffer from it

So how can you avoid the risks associated with blue light?

  • Prefer white lighting in your home
  • Rest your eyes as often as possible using gel masks, for example
  • Do not use screens before going to sleep; it's the best way to limit migraines
  • Use anti-blue light glasses; they will act as a barrier between your screens and your eyes
  • Use special filters for your smartphone and computer; as with glasses, harmful rays will be significantly reduced
  • Prefer reading magnifiers to avoid damaging your eyes
  • Lower the brightness of your screens to limit eye strain
